How Much Notice Should I Get for an Apartment Inspection?

............................................................

While an apartment inspection is going to be seen as routine and is something the landlord is allowed to do on occasion, you may wonder about a few of the components of it before the landlord comes in. First, you need to be aware of the amount of notice that your landlord will need to give you before coming into the apartment and looking around. Since this is your home and personal space, they can’t just knock on the door one day and start poking around for the inspection.

Your landlord needs to give you between 24 to 48 hours minimum notice before they want to do an inspection of the apartment. Some landlords will give even more time, such as a week, so that you can prepare and fit it into your schedule. If you are worried about having the right amount of time to prepare, you can ask them for more notice, but the landlord is not obligated to go with this and they may choose to decline that request.

Some states, depending on where you live, will require a reasonable notice for the landlord to give, but this can be open to interpretation. In some states, like in California, you will find that the landlord is not allowed to do any random apartment checks, whether there is a notice or not, unless there is an emergency or if the apartment has been abandoned by the people who are supposed to be in there.

For the most part, the landlord is going to give enough notice to the tenants before they come in. This allows the tenant to have some time to prepare and makes sure that the landlord is not interrupting and being rude. They do need to give the notice above before they decide to come on in, but some have a yearly schedule that they follow to help determine when they can come into the property each year, taking out some of the surprises of these inspections too. This can help the tenant know when the inspections are going to happen ahead of time.
